Happy Brew Year!

Happy New Year everyone! We apologise for the radio silence these past couple of weeks, we had a fair bit of festive celebrating to do (and we imagine you did as well), but now we’re back. 2016 heralds our second real month of existing, and it’s already shaping up to look like it’s going to be exciting year.

Before the close of last year, we invited the man behind OG magazine, Mr. Daniel Neilson to come and see what Brewtorial was all about. We’re pleased to say he took us up on our offer, and made the trip over with his cousin Rick to learn the mystic ways of the all grain home brewer. Home brewing is many different things to many different people, but to us it’s an obsession. Our mission is to get the people of Brighton (and eventually, the world) brewing their own delicious concoctions without flaw or impediment, as quickly as possible. So naturally, we were keen for some of this passion to rub off on our guests for the day.

And that’s exactly what happened.

Dan & Rick were two of the best brewdents we’ve had the pleasure of taking through the brewing process, and showed a keen interest from the moment we touched down. The recipe we followed was a simple, single hop beer recipe loosely based on the recipe we teach in our Brewtorial classes. It became apparent over the course of the day however, that something a little more exciting was required for a hastily planned follow up drinking session with the guys.

As the wort was cooled and the original gravity measured, it was decided that the finished product deserved a healthy dose of a medley of our favourite dry hops post fermentation, in order to juice it out a bit more. As great a single hop beer can be, it never hurts to add a little more flare to the proceedings.

With the brew day completed and the beer now safely tucked away to ferment, the conversation turned to the future. A collaborative brew made for the market was something both parties were keen on, but what was perhaps more exciting than that was that Brewtorial and OG Magazine will be hosting #craftbeerhour in March, with a stove top brew session special. We will divulge more information as the time draws closer, but we can say this much: if successful, the stove top recipes will become a staple of OG Magazine’s content for the duration of the year.

A small feature of our brew day together will be featured in February’s edition of the magazine, where I’m sure it’ll have been done far more justice than we’ve managed here. Keep an eye out for the inevitable follow up to this post, featuring four men sitting around drinking beer they’ve made. In the meantime, keep the brews rolling out the love alive.

Our New Home

So yesterday we received some very exciting news – we have reached an agreement with the fantastic North Laine Brewhouse in Brighton whereby we are permitted to use the actual brewing premises for our Brewtorial classes! So basically anyone attending a Brewtorial class as of January 2016 will be learning how to home brew in an actual brewery – how cool is that?

As well as one awesome fact of our venue, we also of course have the huge benefit of having an established and highly reputable bar and restaurant right next to us in the same building! Always handy for helping to fill the time in the down time periods of the brewing process.

The next 4 Brewtorial dates have all been added to our events calendar, so anyone looking to book a session for the new year will be now be able to do so. In the mean time, enjoy these artsy and atmospheric photos of our new home that Josh took with his phone camera.

Season’s greetings!

Happy Friday girls and boys! So here we are again at the first weekend of December, which means it’s only another 386 days until Christmas next year. CAN’T BLOODY WAIT! Probably a bit early to be thinking up gift ideas for that one, I grant you. However, if you’re stuck in the mean time, we are now selling (via our website shop) gift certificates to our Brewtorial class, perfectly timed in case you’re like us and massively slack at planning ahead for present ideas.

We’re of the opinion that a memory, be it from learning something new or having a great day out, lasts a lot longer than an actual ‘thing’. Things can be lost, broken or become obsolete, but a good memory stays with you forever. A lot of love, time and passion goes into our classes, so consider sending one of your loved ones along and see what they have to say about it come the new year.

Which leads nicely on to my next point – as of January 2016, the calender structure for our classes will be a lot more defined. We have 6 dates booked for early next year already, and today we got the go ahead to use the awesome North Laine brewery as our go to home base location. So now we will literally be teaching brewing in a brewery. There’s not a lot more you could ask for as a teacher of the beery arts.

Our next Brewtorial class is on December the 12th at the Presuming Ed Coffee House, a lovely and intimate little venue on London road. You can book a slot on our events page. Because it’s an evening session, we will be doing things a little differently. Firstly, everyone who attends will be treated to supper from our good friends at Brighton’s favourite pizza take out – the masterful Pizzaface. We will also be serving beer brewed by the last Brewtorial class to wash it down with, which will be flowing freely all night. To, you know, help the creative process n that.

Finally, we want to give a small shout out to our competition winner, Emma Inch (pictured), who won our Facebook competition and has bagged a Brewtorial class for herself on the house. Congrats Emma, we’re looking forward to hosting you.

Welcome to Brewtorial

IT’S ALIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE! Our brand spanking new website is here, and with it the promise of many wondrous things to come. Designed by the wonderful Jack Freeman, this site is intended to become a hub for all things Brewtorial. While we’re only at the beginning of our (hopefully) long and prosperous span, we’ve got a huge amount coming up over the first year and we can’t wait to share it with you.

So what do we want to achieve with Brewtorial? First and foremost, we want to create a community – one that draws both budding and experienced home brewers to it. Because that’s what beer’s about isn’t it? Despite how you label it, beer has always been about bringing people together. It’s social glue. At least that’s how we perceive it. Therefore, it stands to reason that the process of creating it should be no less about that than the finished article itself. We want to use our knowledge to help usher people into this wonderful hobby, by creating a learning experience that introduces people to the art and the practice of brewing, without making the costly and time consuming mistakes.

As we grow, we will flesh out our classes into full blown courses. We will be looking in depth at every aspect of brewing, whether it’s breaking down the composition of various styles, an analytical study into ingredients, or something as simple as proper cleaning practices. In short, no stone shall be left unturned.

As well as this, we’re going to be putting our money where our mouth is and brewing our own, because why not? After all – why would you trust someone to teach you about beer brewing when they’ve got nothing of their own for you to try? We’re currently in the process of producing our first 3 beers for a January launch, and while we can’t talk about them too much now, what we can say is that two of them will be available for general purchase, while the other is being made especially and exclusively for a much beloved local business. Rest assured, we’ll be spouting our mouths off all over the place when they’re good and ready, and a few lucky people will be invited to taste and review them.

So in the meantime, sit back, relax, pull up a beer or two. There’s more from us right around the corner.
